Good bye Spectacular September! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.
I have always loved September. It is when the garden really starts ripening and when my canning and preserving hits a high gear. It is when we settle into our homeschool routine. My mornings are filled with coffee, devotions with my kids, and then walking along side of them as they dive in and learn and grow. This September has brought new experiences like senior pictures for my oldest daughter with the our new ranch and the Niobrara River as her backdrop. This month also saw her starting her first dual credit college class. Our other girls have started their respective academic levels. I love watching them pursue their interests and set their own goals.
On the ranch, the hay is all getting moved into the hay yards, tucked in until it is needed for winter sustenance. The grass is turning which really packs on the pounds for the babies. Plans are being made for weaning and selling. This year has been an absolute grand wonder if you enjoy looking at Sandhills landscape. The late summer and fall moisture has kept the vegetation in great health while it is slipping into dormancy. It has been a buffet for the eyes to see the grasses and plants on fire with so many different fall colors.
This September has been unseasonable warmer than usual. I’ve continued to use my smoker and grill to avoid heating up the house. The bright side to these warm nights and days is it has eased the rush to get the garden put to bed. I’m enjoying just grabbing a few gallons of tomatoes at a time to process at a slower rate. But we are all ready for soup and sourdough season as we get deeper into the “ber’ months!

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Merriman, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
