Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!

Let’s just jump right in! We are going for it today on MCOOL Monday! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.

You would have to live under a rock to not notice that ag media, all across the spectrums, is covered up in the topic of Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling on beef right now.

If you are a consumer, this is a topic that should also catch your eyes and ears. Value in the grocery store is a top priority for every consumer right now and I am no different. But, it is hard to convey value, when the consumer doesn’t receive all of the information that they need to determine that value.

While we stroll the aisles of any grocery or big box store, we can identify the country of origin on almost every product from underwear to avocados, EXCEPT once you get back to the meat counter. In 2015, Congress repealed Mandatory Country of Origin labeling on beef and pork. How can you as a consumer possible determine value, based solely on the price of a product. Don’t you think you are due the information of origin of that product so you can compute your own consumer value priorities and support who you want to with your consumer dollar.

These were the thoughts that bounced through my head in the hayfield this weekend as I sweated and toiled to create our herds winter feed. While I looked out over the parched prairie I thought, “there are very few of us left that are willing to work like this to feed our country. I hope our government decides the American cattle producers are important enough to protect, before we rely on global imports to fill our meat cases.” Contact your Senators today and let them know you want them to reinstate Mandatory County of Origin Labeling on your beef!

About Karina Jones 518 Articles
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 3 daughters near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion. Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA. You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report that is broadcast on 60 radio stations with coverage in 9 states, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and highlights R-CALF’s work on industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the ranch. Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
