Everyday is Earth Day in Agriculture! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.
Earth Day is about remembering the importance of protecting the environment and its health. Some of my fondest elementary school memories were those Earth Day celebrations! I remember learning how Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are synthetic compounds (carbon, fluorine, chlorine) formerly used widely as refrigerants, aerosol propellants, and solvents due to their stability. They cause severe environmental damage by breaking down the stratospheric ozone layer and acting as potent greenhouse gases. Mainly, I could never look at another can of Aquanet hairspray again without feeling the guilt that I was destroying the Earth’s ozone layer!
I do think that Earth Day education is important. Those primitive lessons I learned have made me a more mindful consumer as I always think carefully about the waste a product will leave when I am done using it.
While most of the world is celebrating Earth Day today, the truth is farmers and ranchers celebrate our earth every day! We know that we owe our livelihoods to the 8 inches of topsoil that we need to protect and the help mother nature could give us with some moisture. It is always our intention to be good stewards of the land and leave it better than we found it, so please join us agriculturists in protecting our dear Mother Earth by properly disposing of trash, being more mindful of the waste you produce, and if I could just use this platform to send out one message, “STOP RELEASING BALLOONS”! Once you see them disappear from the horizon, they do in fact end up on someones land or waterway where they become a death sentence if ingested by animals, both wild and domestic.
