Honestly if it wasn’t for my job as the Field Director with R-CALF USA, I would have never met Monte James the way it all went down, that day at Bassett Livestock Auction Market. When I am not mommin’, ranchin’, or telling stories on the radio, I am passionately fighting for fairness in the cattle market and brighter a future for all cattle producers.
See, I think what my neighbors and I do is a noble profession. We care deeply about the land. Most of the time our livestock’s wellbeing comes before our own. We see value and purpose to all living creatures. And at the heart of it all, we feed people. We grow food to feed our neighbors, our country, and even the world.
Cheap food policy and corporate greed and power has taken advantage of cattle producers. We have been forced to become price takers and the system wants us to keep producing cattle below cost of production.
It is this cattle market crisis that I work to correct everyday with R-CALF USA with the goal of making the cattle industry profitable again with fair and competitive cattle markets.

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 3 daughters near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
