The interweb has spoken and the interweb says today is National Soft Serve Ice Cream Day so we better explore this topic further, today on Ranch Raised.
There is just something that takes you back to your childhood when you think about a cone or dish of soft serve ice cream. For me it was only an occasional treat that was enjoyed on a trip to town usually with my grandparents.
Besides the obvious differences between soft serve and traditional hard ice cream, there are actually compositional differences. While they are made with the same ingredients, soft ice cream has less milk fat. It also has more air than hard ice cream. Both of these factors contribute to the ice cream being more delicate and smoother. The milk fats in the hard ice cream cause it to be firmer when frozen. Another difference is the temperatures the ice creams are kept frozen. Soft ice cream machines keep a temperature of -6°C. However, hard ice cream is kept at a temperature of -12°C. While that might not seem like a big difference, the evidence is in the ice creams.
Soft serve ice cream can be enjoyed with a buffet of mix in options like crushed up cookies or candy bars. Or perhaps you like your with topping spooned right over the top like strawberries or hot fudge.
Enough about the details, lets just celebrate National Soft Serve Ice Cream Day by heading down to the local soft serve gettin’ place and buying a whole round for family, friends, or maybe even the hay field help….hey, I thought I would try!

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Merriman, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
