Yesterday I started quiet a tale
About the people who raise cattle with extreme care without fail
The steers did good on that Sandhills grass,
Now they are headed to Basset Livestock Auction to take a spin around their sale ring at last!
The buyers came from all around
to see the yearlings that packed on the grass pounds.
Some old boys with some Iowa corn
Said Head ‘em east down Highway 20, I’ll fire up the feed wagon in the morn.
And there those steers stayed to feast on the finest of meals.
Where they were cared for by men with the cattle feeding will of steal.
When it was clear that they would hit Choice or Prime,
They were hauled to finest fat cattle auction market of all time!
The packers sat in the high seats
at Stockman’s Livestock where the live bidding brought the heat!
On to the rail those steers went,
To be put into boxes and off to the restaurants and grocery stores they were sent.
What most don’t know is that steak on your plate
Was taken care of by a lot of good folks that are absolutely first rate.
From the rancher that cared for those babies at birth
To the backgrounders and feeders that increased their worth.
To the pen riders and office staff at the best sale barns around,
To the truckers who haul them on the hoof and once they are ground round.
To the men and women who work hard on the processing line,
To the chef and wait staff who bring it to your table to dine.
Let’s all be grateful for the food we have to eat.
And let’s raise glass the men and women who bring us the beef!

Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
