Quality time! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.
I’m going to spill a little secret today that might tip into the barrel of unsolicited marriage advice. Decades ago as part of some leadership development that I was doing I read the book, “5 Love Languages” which I will say I highly recommend to everyone. Most people will agree that reading this book should give you a deeper understanding of how you best receive or want attention and love and even more importantly how those you work with best receive attention, known as their “love language”. This book is a really easy and enjoyable read.
It is usually really easy to then understand what makes people “tick”. When I initially read it my husband and I were pretty fresh into our dating relationship but I was quickly able to realize what his love language was and why he always wanted me by his side. 20 plus years later and his love language has not changed.
“Hey dear, wanna ride along and go feed cows.”
“Babe, wanna go look at pairs?”
“How about you run the rake and I bale so it will make the job get done faster.”
And the ole classic, “Have you seen the fence around such and such pasture? Maybe you could go along and pound staples while I stretch wires.”
His love language is totally quality time! Nothing says, “I love you” like a new pair of leather gloves in a ladies fit given to you for Christmas as a hint of his romantic plans he has for you this spring.

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
