Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!

A hard and cold lesson. Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.

Last night as my husband and I were pulling into the yard he spotted a hydrant that had been left on. Over the weekend our kids relished in the warm weather and kept their show heifers on the wash rack and worked hair. But somebody forgot to shut off the hydrant and drain the hose. A quick fall in the mercury yesterday resulted in a frozen hydrant.

So at 8:30 pm, my husband walked into the house to announce that all 3 girls needed to get bundled up because they were going to learn a lesson. He was calm and as cool as a cucumber. My girls knew their fate. They knew someone left on that hydrant and it was froze. He went and grabbed his propane torch. Our oldest daughter was tasked with heating up that cold steel while her sisters held flashlights. The wind was brisk and the real feel was somewhere around 0 degrees. But, there was a lesson to taught and learned. After some time doing what we have all had to do, water began to flow and the hydrant was saved a worse fate.

Everyone came back to the house to warm up and the mood was much lighter. There were a few comments made, but I knew as all 3 girls headed off to bed with cold fingers and toes, they were going to think about this lesson little longer than if their parents would have just came to the rescue and unthawed that hydrant while they watch from the warmth of the house window.

Sometimes lessons sting a little. But, growth and learning usually happen outside of the comfort zone. So for at least this winter, I am confident that those 3 cattle loving young ladies will NOT forget to leave a hydrant on. And when they do forget this lesson, later on in life, they are now equipped with the experience of knowing just what they need to do to fix it!

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.

Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
