Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!

Hey Good Lookin’! Whatcha got Cookin’? Thanks for starting your week with me right here on Ranch Raised.

If you ask any parent or head of household who is in charge of getting meals on the table what the hardest part of feeding a family is, I think we would all agree that just coming up with ideas is 9/10 of the battle!

Now that I have all of my kids home, everyday, all day, I recognized that meal planning and prep were going to be crucial in creating harmony in my home. When 3 of my kids went to public school, I at least got to breathe a little during lunch time. But, it is like anything else in life, you just need to analyze the problem and try some solutions until something works. I have become more committed to planning out a weekly menu with at least one meal of the day set. I have stopped buying convenience breakfast foods and am avoiding commercial snacks. I can see how bad eating habits actually develop at the grocery store, not so much the kitchen.

I have always had a well stocked pantry with home grown and canned foods, so now I just supplement with fresh produce. Having a meal plan and a focus on whole food snacks sets me up for healthier focus when I walk into that grocery store. I still like to pick up our weekly grocery store ad and stock up on things when they are on sale, like cheese and yogurt.

If you are needing some meal ideas, I have been posting my weekly meal plan on the Ranch Raised FB page the last few weeks. Feel free to borrow any ideas and please let me know what you’ve got cooking in your kitchen. Thanks to a suggestion on social media a few weeks ago, I made Sweet Potato Nachos for my family and they were a hit!

Stay Safe, Stay Warm and Have a great day!

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.

Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the Jones Ranch.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
