Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!
The hills are alive! Welcome to this Tuesday edition of Ranch Raised!
Last night baby boy and I got to take a much needed ride through the hills with my husband checking a couple groups of pairs and cows that are still expecting. This weekend’s moisture really breathed new spring life into the landscape. There is something good for the soul about being out and about in nature and “soaking” it all in! I admit, I rarely take my cell phone with me when I’m outside, so I hardly ever capture a picture. I guess I am still of the generation that doesn’t feel the need to have it with me all time. And in return, I notice a certain connection to my surroundings that is uninterrupted and deep.
I appreciate the prairie coming to life and beautiful momma cows utilizing it to make milk to nurse their baby calves. The health of this year’s spring babies has been excellent, and I fully expect them to hit your grill and plate later next summer. How is that for the circle of life lesson?
The rhubarb is in overdrive. The chives and irises are blooming. The kids and I planted some flowers that we purchased at our local FFA greenhouse. I am itching to get into the garden and start some seeds followed by all those heat loving plants.
You may not be able to live your life in the wide open spaces that I do, but I bet a walk through your city park or in state park would do your soul the same good that it does mine. As you plan your summer, don’t forget that so much outdoor recreation can be free, so don’t miss a single opportunity to connect with nature!
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the Jones Ranch.
Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
