Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!

What in the bomb cyclone is gonna happen this week? Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.

To be completely honest, the term bomb cyclone that is describing the upcoming weather event that is going to hit the middle and eastern US later this week makes me want to vomit. It was 6 years ago on this very week that for the first time in my lifetime I was hearing meteorologists throw out the term. Never living through one, we just figured it would be spicy spring storm. A little bit of driving rain mixing over to snow and some wind mixed in. You know the kind of weather that ranchers are made for. Only there were so many other factors that we just could not of prepared for, making it the most disastrous storm in our operation.

While we have a week of beautiful weather here, ahead of the storm, which is completely different than the bomb cyclone of 2019, the anxiety still rises. I really don’t know if we will get anything more than wind here in central Nebraska. And our other ranch where the cows are headed to calve this week might get blizzard conditions. Either way the ominous feelings that blanket this country are real.

I just want everyone to prepare with their communities. I think the south and east of here are in for a bumpy ride. Stock up on the things you need. Check in with your neighbors and loved ones and make sure they are prepared and have a safety plan.

Maybe all the preparation will be for nothing and we can get back to our regularly scheduled spring programming next week!

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.

Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the Jones Ranch.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
