You may have recognized my opening line. It is the theme for the nationally recognized youth organization, 4-H. I cannot let October slip by without recognizing one of my favorite things that is a part of my past, present, and future. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has proclaimed October 1-7 as National 4-H Week! 4-H is the largest youth development organization in the United States – a network of 500,000 volunteers and 3,500 4-H professionals that provides caring and supportive mentoring to 6 million 4-H’ers.
A time when you see window displays dotted in towns across the country creatively crafted by 4-H clubs in that community. This is the time of year when 4-Her’s put last year to rest by turning in those records books. If you 4-Hers are anything like my girls they possibly have next year’s show calves in the barn halter breaking, training hair, and dreaming of the next show season. And there is always searching the world wide web for those next recipes to try and crafts to create.
4-H engages, enables and empowers more than 6 million young people every day, and this year’s annual 4-H Week reminds us that every child has valuable strengths and real influence to improve the world around us with a theme of “I ❤ 4-H”.

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
