I am a lineman for the county…….

Thanks for tuning in to this Tuesday edition of Ranch Raised!

Did you think I was going to get on her and just belt out that Glen Campbell classic? Well, I mean, I could, but I have better things to tell you about!

Today we celebrate National Lineman Appreciation Day! After 2012’s Hurricane Sandy, the 113th Congress passed a bill designating April 18 as National Lineman Appreciation Day and it became law in 2013.

Around 1840, the introduction of telegraph lines on trees and poles for long-distance communication create the need for linemen. By the 1930’s Demand for linemen grew. They traveled from city to city, making a good living and returning home between jobs. And today our linemen are a staple in the American workforce. Their daily contribution at their jobs makes us more productive as a society and comfortable in our own homes.

I have expressed my appreciation for linemen in the past on Ranch Raised, usually following a winter storm or blizzard where they selflessly battled the elements to restore power. Their jobs are dangerous and require meticulous attention.

So, on this day we give thanks to the linemen not only in our county, but all over our country that literally power our world!
Have a great day!

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.

Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the Jones Ranch.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
