Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!
If April showers bring May flowers, can someone tell me what this wind will bring? Thanks for joining me on this midweek edition of Ranch Raised.
Our old friend the Red Flag Warning has been back around these parts. I read that there were grass and wildfires in 6 Nebraska counties yesterday. My area is pretty dry. We were on the short end of snowfall, comparatively, and we are coming out of drought conditions in 2022, the scenario for spring 2023 could use a lot of help. We’ve turned off hot and windy which makes looking at our brown landscape a little more raw.
I drug a hose over to my rhubarb this weekend and gave it a good soaking. It seems to be the only green thing growing around here and the Lord knows I’m going to have to keep helping it along in the moisture department. Maybe the taste of that first strawberry rhubarb pie will ease the pain of our dry conditions if we have not received any rain by then.
Usually, I spring clean my garden by raking up all the old dead foliage into a giant pile and then burning but that is currently against the law in my area, so I’m thinking I’m going to have to come up with a different plan for getting all that old stuff off my garden.
I’ve got some girls anxious to get some taters in the ground so they will keep cracking the whip until this momma gets their ground ready. It’s the hustle and bustle of the spring season so I’ve got more tales from these dusty trails. See you right back here, tomorrow!
HOT BARN REPORT: Shop Small, Shop Local, Support Rural America
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the Jones Ranch.
Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
