Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!

Welcome to a brand-new week right here on Ranch Raised.

As farmers and ranchers, we don’t necessarily think about time or the year in terms of calendar months. We have system of seasons that we marking the passing of time or the anticipation of upcoming events. There is haying season, preconditioning and weaning season, harvest, calving, branding season, planting, etc. You get the idea.

With in every season there are “sub-seasons”. Right now, we are in that season of ranching where you look at the weather at night to see how cold it is supposed to get to you know how long the ground will be frozen in the morning to get feeding done without having to bring in big 4-wheel drive equipment to pull out of the mud. It is a season that we charge through because the blessing of moisture reminds us to whom much is given much is required. It is another way the Good Lord keeps us humble.

It is a season of muddy boots and muddy coveralls. It is a season of taxing your washer and dryer to the max and praying your laundry appliances will just make it through this season because there is no time for the ole girls to lie down on you know and leave you in the trenches with mountains of badly soiled laundry that has to be attended to.

It is a season of prayers answered. We badly needed the moisture. We didn’t get as much snow as our neighbors to the north but we got enough for renewed hope. Knowing that we have to push through this season to get to what our souls yearn for as farmers and ranchers, green grass and growing crops.

Okay that’s enough for today! Come back this week for some more talk about seasons.

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.

Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the Jones Ranch.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
