Welcome to the BIG SHOW…I mean March! Thanks for starting out the merry month of March right here on Ranch Raised.

Let’s open March with fun facts like March’s birth flower is the daffodil. Daffodils are synonymous with spring and new beginnings. The gifting of a daffodil is said to be one of the purest expressions of love.

March’s birthstone is the aquamarine stone and it invokes tranquility. As the color would suggest, this stone is also associated with the sea. In fact, that’s what the whole name means. Aquamarine is derived from the Latin word aqua, meaning water, and marina, meaning the sea. This gem is a type of beryl; its color can be pale to dark blue, or blue-green. I’ve always known this because my sister has a March birthday and always got the prettiest birthstone jewelry when we were growing up.

And America’s favorite March pastime is calving, right??? Okay, maybe not for the entire population. In our world March means calving. Preparing for calving. Increasing anxiety over calving. Consuming more coffee during calving. Pretty much any social function that we are invited to, or our kids are asked to participate in gets responded to with, “Sorry, we are calving.” Sorry, no spring club volleyball for our girls. We are calving.

So come along with me in March and enjoy the beginning of the crazy spring season. I hope we all see sprigs of green grass peeking through as the snow melts. We can start looking at some spring recipes. Did someone say lemon and lime? And we can all enjoy this season of life.

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 3 daughters near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.

Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report that is broadcast on 60 radio stations with coverage in 9 states, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and highlights R-CALF’s work on industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the ranch.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
