I know, we are now under one week until Christmas. Blood pressure is rising across the land. The weather is not exactly cooperating. A perfect holiday experience hangs in the balance….or does it.
I have never been one to lay awake at night dreaming of the perfect Holiday setting. Historically during the week of Christmas we are tethered to the work in the barn as we are usually kidding a bunch of goats. This year, thanks to a billy going bad, we won’t be having any Christmas kidding miracles.
Honestly, let it go. Let go of all those crazy expectations of having the table set with coordinating napkins and plates. Let go of all the pressure of finding your kid the specific remote control car they asked for or any toys for that matter. Yes, there I said it, I am not a fan of frivolous plastic made in China.
The truth is, in 2 years no one will remember if you had a red or green tablecloth or any table cloth at all. What they will remember was when the Christmas break when popped some popcorn and watched family movies at night and you let the kids invite all their friends over. Or you called up the cousins and said let’s go bowling. Or you grabbed some sleds to hit the snow and capped off the day with some hot chocolate.
Those are days that kids remember. So don’t sweat the small stuff like what you are stuffing stockings with. Just toss some extra popcorn and hot cocoa in the shopping cart and wing the rest! It has worked for me all these years 😊
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 3 daughters near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
