You know I love history, so naturally I was curious to look at the history of elections in the US. When the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, the US was in a unique position. As you looked across the globe, countries were governed by monarchies and principalities. Nobody was voting kings and queen in and out, if you know what I mean.
So the USA was not only breaking ground on a new country to reveal to the rest of the world but also a different way government that would involve the people, like the rest of the world would never see. But, we all know that not everyone would be allowed equal voting rights from the get go. Those coveted voting rights would have to be fought for by minorities to get to the place where we are today.
It is fascinating to comb through history and see the progression of how voting evolved to add more minority groups, little by little. Then in 1971 the voting age would be lowered from 21 to 18. Afterall, it would be recognized that if our young men would be armed to fight for our country in Vietnam, they had earned the right to vote.
I think that we all need to hold this day in higher esteem. While many have fought and sacrificed all so that we can maintain this form of government, it becomes our duty to exercise the right that some have died to protect for us.
Make it a great day! Get out and exercise your American right to vote! And you know what, take your kids with you and show them the importance of this civic duty!

That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
