1000 Hours Outside! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.

I’m really not one to tell other people how to parent. Lord knows, I’ve got enough to deal with keeping my own family’s train on the track! However, I do want to throw out a resource that maybe you didn’t know about. While spending my time in the car and my time standing at my kitchen sink doing dishes, I like to listen to audiobooks, I’ve been captivated by a certain author the last few years. Her message and philosophies about raising a family really resonate with me.

Her name is Ginny Yurich and she is the creator of the concept of 1000 Hours Outside! Just google, “1000 Hours Outside” to check out all of the free resources. While I have soaked in a few of her books, this idea of returning our children and families to creating normalcy around being outside, she gives incredibly alarming statistics. According to the National Recreation and Park Association, “US children only spend an average of 4-7 minutes a day outside,” yes, I said MINUTES, “compared to an average of 7.5 hours a day in front of electronic media.” I can not fully convey the depths of nausea that washes over me just saying that.

The positive effects of outdoor free play have been studied since the beginning of time and are undeniable. Let’s get families back outside walking the neighborhoods, biking around the park, and even just playing in the good ole dirt! Come back tomorrow, I’ve got a few more thoughts about this type of play and engagement.

About Karina Jones 475 Articles
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 3 daughters near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion. Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA. You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report that is broadcast on 60 radio stations with coverage in 9 states, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and highlights R-CALF’s work on industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the ranch. Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
