Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!
As a girl growing up on ranch in rural western Nebraska, attending a small country school during my early years, I could literally picture myself in the scenes of so many stories of the Little House on the Prairie series. I knew the love Mary and Laura had for Pet and Patty because I was a girl spent all my free time on the back of a horse. I despised that snotty,Nellie Oleson and I had never even met the girl. I knew the meals that were made in those heavy cast irons dutch ovens and pans because my grandma only cooked with cast iron. I imagined how they would sweat under the hot Dakota sun because there wasn’t a tractor on our place that had air conditioning when I was growing up. And then I dreamed of having my own Almanzo someday and starting a family with a baby Rose.
Now, I look in admiration of a simpler time. I yearn for my kids to experience this series through their own lense and I can only hope they feel that idyllic connection to the characters and stories.
Today, I celebrate the life that the author Laura Ingalls Wilder. Born in Wisconsin, in 1867 and traveled the frontier with her family. She would marry Almanzo Wilder in DeSmet South Dakota where they would mourn an infant son and raise their pride and joy, a daughter, Rose. They would later settle in Missouri. And it was that sweet, talented Rose who urged her mother who was in her 60’s, to write the very series that would become an American literary classic. Today we remember that it was this day in 1957 that Laura Ingalls Wilder drew her last breath but cemented a timeless legacy for us all to treasure.
