Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!

Thanks for coming back today to Ranch Raised. Yesterday I talked about how consumers have sold their freedom for convenience and no where is that more evident than at the grocery store. Consumers have become slaves to foods that may save them time but cost them dearly. So maybe if we all stepped back into the kitchen and became more confident in simple homemaking skills we could keep some money in our wallet and take back some of that time we spend away from home chasing the almighty dollar. At some point I think we all are yearning to get off the consumer hamster wheel!

Today I’m sharing with you my simple 40 Minute Burger Bun Recipe that I have been using for years off of the Taste of Home website. This recipe yields 12 buns with is enough for us to have burgers for supper and then use the remaining one for breakfast sandwiches!

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees.

In a large bowl, dissolve 2 tablespoons of dry active yeast in 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons of warm water. Add 1/3 cup of oil and 1/4 cup of sugar; let stand for 5 minutes until it is bubbly.

Add 1 egg, 1 teaspoon of salt and 3 cups of flour to form a soft dough. You may need to add up to another 1/2 cup of flour.

Once your dough is together, knead it on a hard surface until it is smooth and elastic. This usually takes 3-5 minutes. You will now divide your dough into 12 equal balls and shape into flats buns to lay on your baking sheet. Let them rest and rise for 10 minutes.

Bake for 8-12 minutes until golden brown. You can brush with butter and sprinkle sesame seeds on them for that extra flair. Let them cool on a wire rack before cutting.

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Merriman, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.

Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
