Millions, billions, trillions. What will climate change and feeding the world cost the American taxpayer?!?!

Welcome to this special Friday edition of the Hot Barn Report.

The Farm Bill is an interesting animal to me, on second thought, all of American government is a strange beast. Anyway. As you are well aware it is a Farm Bill year. Big ag lobbying groups that are backed by powerful corporate partners, commodity checkoff money, or insurance businesses are doubling down on their lobbying priorities and filling the hallways on capitol hill, banging on doors, and schmoozing anyone who can vote in Congress to pack that Farm Bill with the pork they need for their business to survive another round.

We are seeing the conversation focusing on conservation, crop insurance, and farm subsidies, which seems a bit contrary to me when those are the same activists that despise free and fair markets and detest anti-trust enforcement.

In typical DC fashion, both sides of the aisle have become intent on gathering the green from America’s wallet to feed the lobbying groups that fund them. If our markets were performing in a free and fair manner, would we need subsidies? The American government has dipped its hand in the insurance business at every turn, crop and health insurance for example? Is it really working for the taxpayer who must fund it and the producers and people who must buy it? Isn’t that like having to pay for your groceries twice?

Does anyone really believe that the American farmer and rancher are doing such a poor job at conserving the land, water, and air that they occupy that they need to be paid to manage their property a certain way, as determined by the government?

Congress is currently developing the farm bill for 2023, which is projected to authorize $709 billion over the next five years and $1.4 trillion over the next ten years. Notably, over 80% of the $1.4 trillion will be allocated to food assistance programs, but over $221 billion will remain for programs such as those that support commodity crops – like corn, wheat, soybeans, and sugar – the dairy industry, crop insurance, and specialty crops like hemp.

It is refreshing to see common sense, taxpayer neutral solutions being supported by some members of Congress. For example, Senator John Hoeven from ND and Ben Ray Lujan from NM just joined the roster of Senators support mandatory country of origin labeling on beef. Doesn’t that just make sense to label beef with its country of origin so that consumers can choose to support domestic producers with their grocery dollars instead of being forced to support ag industries going bust with their tax dollars? So why is most of Congress still denying consumers the opportunity to know where their beef is raised? I don’t know, but feel free to ring them up on the old “telly” and see why they are not supporting American cattle producers. The capitol switchboard number is 202-224-3121.

Throw some USA beef on the grill this weekend and support the American cattle industry like these Hot Barns that power this program: Stockmens Livestock, Lemmon Livestock, North Platte Stockyards, St. Onge/Newell, Platte Livestock Market, Tri County Stockyards, Torrington Livestock, Creighton Livestock Market, Bassett Livestock Auction, Mobridge Livestock, Ogallala Livestock Auction Market, and Presho Livestock.
