Time is actually something I think about a lot. As a mom, I’m a collector of the time that I have with my kids. As ranchers, we are always racing time to finish one season, while always having our mind on the next season. This ranching rat race never allows for much idle time. Anyone who has studied the human race knows that where one person spends their time is a reflection of their values.
Yesterday was a classic example of a sociological experiment that needs to studied by American society. A national coffee chain offered some cheap, Chinese made toys with purchase of a couple large drinks. Soon, there were videos and pictures going viral online of the miles and miles of lines of cars that amassed outside every location. As, I watched these posts comes across my newsfeed, I thought, “this is the American train wreck and I just can’t look away.”
My takeaways from this sociological experiment where a free toy with purchase caused an epic turnout of American consumers to spend not only money but an incredible amount of time wasted is this. We are watching Americans become more and more engrossed in a consumer lifestyle that is swallowing our country whole. Their appetite for more can no longer be quenched. What if the time spent by all in those coffee lines would have spent cleaning up parks, serving at a homeless shelter, growing their own food, enjoying time at a park with their kids…how much different would our country look.
