This past weekend we took the kids over to Fort Robinson to check out their new aquatic center. It was like visiting an old friend.
Fort Robinson is a place that I grew up visiting a lot during my childhood. We took lots of school field trips there. My grandpa loved parking a camper there in the summer and hosting family, especially during the Fourth of July, when the neighboring town of Crawford had their big rodeo and shin-dig doing on.
Somethings about Fort Robinson never change. I mean, many of the buildings were built in the late 1800’s but it does feel like every time I go, no matter how many years are in between those visits, I see it with new eyes and new excitement.
I know, I know, I’m building it up to sound like Disneyland or something and that it is NOT, thank goodness. But, reading the historical facts about this fort just grips me and makes me realize how important these historical sites are in America’s history. You walk on those hallowed grounds, touch those historic brick walls while looking at the bluffs to the north, and you just feel a jolt of that history travel through your veins. The nostalgia is heavy and I makes me appreciate so much about this land.
I want to know if you take your kids to historical places? Do you have those conversations about what has happened on American soil generations and centuries ago? I think it is totally worth exposing our youth to more of our nations history, especially during this 250th anniversary year.
