Today is the day we pack up the entire ranch, every piece of clothing we own, leave no snacks behind and waddle down Highway 20 with no less than 3 vehicles making our almost 100 mile trek to our county fair. Folks, with the family I have, it is an accomplishment to just get everything to the fair.
And you know what, after 12 years of 4-H parenting my degree of planning has faded. My ambition to make sure that every project makes it in tip-top shape has dulled. In fact, we didn’t even go out to the garden this morning to pick produce. We didn’t get all the baking done that was planned and I’m not even sure if my oldest daughter’s homemade marshmallows are going to make the trip. It will all be fine. What we forget in supplies and underwear can be bought once we get to town.
I’ve become a more type “F”-ish mom. Which is a mom who is no where near Type A. Because of the travel, I won’t make the meals for fair that I used to provide my family. Instead, I’ve had to give myself grace that it is okay for even me, the mom, to take a break. And feeding my family by supporting local food trucks is not a sin!
So this week I throw expectation to the wind. We are at the county fair to have fun. To support everyone. To celebrate the accomplishment of just getting there. To have someone else make my coffee in the morning and my walking taco in the afternoon. To let my kids play on bounce houses and eat snow cones with their friends.
These are the days that I will never regret, so I’m not going to spend them wishing them away.
