“Anybody can love the mountains, but it’s takes a soul to love the prairie” – Willa Cather

Thanks for stopping by today, on Ranch Raised.

We are in the middle of National Grasslands Week, which is near and dear to my heart. When I look out every window of my home, it is in fact grasslands in every direction to the reaches of every horizon. I live in an area that is like a historical artifact because it looks much the same as it did 100 years ago and even 200 years ago when these vast plains were settled by the pioneers and sprawled by the Native Americans before that.

These grasslands were I reside are the where the buffalo roamed to feed civilizations and now where cattle graze to feed a global population. It can be the harshest of climates swinging from epic blizzards to disastrous fires and drought. Yet, somehow, with time and prayer, the grasslands have a way of healing themselves. They are patient and steady. They are resilient and preserver.

The United States was once covered from coast to coast by a blanket of grass. But, this landscape is quickly shrinking due to urban sprawl, industrial takeover, and cultivation. In my little piece of this world, I am probably safe from those grassland predators. And while just a minute source of the population understands the power and brilliance of the grasslands. I’m okay, keeping that little secret tucked into my pocket. So I cheer on the grasslands in all their glory and their contribution to the world that is vastly understated.

About Karina Jones 507 Articles
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 3 daughters near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion. Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA. You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report that is broadcast on 60 radio stations with coverage in 9 states, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and highlights R-CALF’s work on industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the ranch. Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
