The message from a movie! Thanks for starting your week with me right here on Ranch Raised. Nothing is better than Father’s Day Weekend rain showers to inspire our family to take a few hours off the ranch. I can’t remember the last time we went and saw the Sunday matinee at our local movie theater but we did just that yesterday.
Now, I’m not going to ruin the surprise by telling you which movie we went to, but I was totally unprepared for the emotions that would simmer up inside of me. In fact, I watched the movie with a lump in my throat because somehow a movie writer was so bold to use their cinematic platform to dish out an American reality, but I’m not sure how many viewers will take it to heart. That reality is that children don’t play with toys anymore but instead are on electronic devices. I watched as an animated feature film pulled back the curtain on American childhood. Kids who are chronically indoors with their attention held hostage by a screen. Neighborhoods where kids do not engage with each other. Toys that are retired. Imaginations that have went dim. Kids scared to communicate with their peers in person.
As I watched this movie through the lense of what I am, a parent, it left me taken a back. I am by no means a perfect parent. And my kids are exposed to some screen time on an old iPad we have and on my phone. But, this movie was a reminder to me to become more vigilant and intentional about limiting screen time and what my kids are exposed to.
