Dropping you a line, to tell you, “look up and check you lines”!
There is no doubt that these violent summer storms have wreaked havoc on our power infrastructure. In rural areas, like where I live, there is understanding that lineman can’t drive all the lines routinely, after storms. I live at the end of our power line. Our power zig zags across miles of open range that is not accessible by county road. So, we take responsibility and stay vigilant “looking up” to make sure that our lines and poles are safe.
Last week we were moving some bulls around when my husband noticed a severe swoop in the top power line that hung over one of our pastures. The top of the pole had split and the insulator and power line were dangling dangerously close to the bottom wire. Even a mild breeze could have made the power lines tangle, causing sparks to fly, fires could start and the neighborhood be in danger. We gave the instructions that it was the 6th pole west of the last automate on the end of our road. They drove the hour and a half to our ranch and worked to get a temporary safe solution in place. This morning, I got a call from our power company giving warning that they would be shutting us off for about 3 hours as they worked to replace poles on our line. Had we not made that call last week alerting them to trouble, they wouldn’t have seen the other poles that were in bad shape.
So this is your reminder! Look up and stay alert. If you see something on a power line that looks odd or not quite right, report it immediately! Be the eyes to the sky for your power company, especially in rural areas!
