Bear with me today, I’ve got the hay season crud, but the show, must go on! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.
I am not usually an allergy sufferer, but man alive, there is something out there in these hay meadows that is trying to kill me! I really enjoy being in a tractor and haying, I enjoy it even more when there is better hay to cut, but I digress. I grew up in a tractor, haying, before I had a driver’s license. My grandpa always said, “there is something so fulfilling about looking out at a field at the end of the day and seeing all that you accomplished.” And that has always stuck with me. I do enjoy being on a tractor and haying, but today, I’m going to try really hard to stay out of the field and hopefully whip these allergies that I didn’t even know I had. Now, don’t worry, we have a full roster of hired hands, I mean kids, that can take my place behind the wheel. Yes, our girls are expected to do the heavy lifting right along with us. They all have cattle that eat, so they all need to do their time the hay field. And if they aren’t in the field, then they can be checking windmills, putting out salt & mineral, going around fence, and all the other ranch duties that never end.
In a sense, the hayfield built me. I grew up in a time before cell phones and air pods. Sitting on a tractor, usually with no AC made you very aware of all of your senses. You better be drinking your water. You are constantly looking around and listening for every sound. We have a rule at our house, NO AIRPODS in the tractors. Our kids, too, need to learn how to heighten their senses and become problem solvers, because we can’t hold their hands forever, but we can provide them a tractor seat to sit in and build that character!
