Happy Fall Ya’ll! Thank you for joining me today on Ranch Raised.
Today, actually tonight, marks the the fall equinox! The autumnal equinox is an astronomical event that marks the start of autumn (or fall).
Those of us who work outside everyday, are very aware of the changing of the seasons. Our evenings have really been cooling down. In fact, my little boy is actually wearing pajamas to bed. The windows are spending less time open. We head out in the morning after some hot coffee and a hardy breakfast with a coat on and contemplating more layers. My husbands morning ride through fall calving cows has him screwing his felt down on tight and popping the collar of his heavy coat. We pulled a big zucchini out of the garden so we are going to kick up the oven and do some baking today.
The little cherry tomatoes are losing their sun kissed sweetness and developing really thick skins. I am thankful for the new wave of baby cucumbers that are enjoying this cool off, but I am predicting that most of my tomatoes will ripen inside instead of on the vine.
The fall born baby calves are really starting to hair up. And the spring calving mommas are getting that look in their eye knowing that they job for their calf rearing season is almost done. The warm season grasses are developing a deep golden hue over the hills. Meanwhile the meadows and draws are emerald green flush with cool season grasses coming on.
How lucky are we to live in a part of the world were we get to use all of our senses to feast on the changing of the seasons.
