As our children develop and mature it is natural to start picking up on their God given strengths and abilities starting to surface. We used to joke that my oldest daughter may never master putting on mascara but by golly she can make gravy….and that is the truth!
I got a reminder that this week is National Biscuits and Gravy week! Let me just say that one of the motherhood milestones that I am very intent on making sure my kids learn is how to make gravy! I grew up at my grandmothers feet learning how to make milk gravy. I must have stirred a million miles over that cast iron skillet. After frying up the chicken or tenderized round steaks, my grandma would add some flour to the drippings and tell me to make sure to let that flour cook up in that grease. Then she would add would seem like was a half a jug of milk, but she always knew she had a crew of men to feed so it would take a lot of gravy. Then she would get me on a chair or step stool next to the stove and set me to stirring with a wisk. Honestly, kids these days who need a lesson in patience and focus really need a lesson in learning to make gravy! As the years went by, I would start looking for those little bubbles in the middle of skillet which was my signal to start whisking faster. Then I mastered “the feel”. The feel of the gravy coming together and knowing just how far to thicken it over that heat before it would break. Yes, gravy can break. And it will make the cook cry and ruin the meal.
You can bet we will be celebrating National Biscuits and Gravy Week in my kitchen as this is one of my family’s favorite meals! And don’t forget to teach your kids how to make gravy as it is truly a rite of passage to a successful adulthood!
