September is Family Meals Month, which is really nice follow-up to what I talked about yesterday. So if you missed that episode you can catch the replay on the Your Ag Network website or the Ranch Raised FB page.
For some reason, I have chosen to put microscope on American society. What is normal? Or maybe we should ask, “What SHOULD be normal?” According to the Nebraska Extension, September is Family Meals Month. Unfortunately, there is a growing body of evidence that Americans don’t sit down around the dinner table. A study by NPR and Harvard reported that almost one in two families are struggling to find time to dine together. To be precise, 46% said it was difficult to eat together on a regular basis.
Not only that, but the average family dinner lasted for a full hour-and-a-half 60 years ago. Today, the average dinner lasts just 12 minutes. The researchers also found that the frequency of family dinners has gone down by 33% in the last two decades alone, and even when families do eat together it’s often in front of a television screen. I don’t have to worry about that because are TV is not in view of the table and it is not hooked up anyway. Another rule at my table, absolutely NO devices, ever! I don’t have to police it, with 4 kids, they will call you out in a heartbeat!
