County Fair Culture! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.

In our rural areas, the county fair is the highlight of the summer. Wether your family is involved in 4-H and FFA, or not, the county fair usually has some sort of entertainment factor that draws the locals to this gathering spot, even if it is the church pie and ice cream social.

However, if we don’t support our county fairs, they too will slip away. Take the time to shut down the tractors, jump in the car and head to your local fair. You will be amazed at the talent that your local youth have on display. You will be inspired by all that is exhibited even in the open class section. The quilts, the jellies, the monster zucchinis, all under one roof. There will be food that you don’t have the opportunity to enjoy any other time of the year. Local businesses will be showing off what they have to offer. There might be a band where you can cut a rug with your sweetheart or perhaps a rodeo or parade to enjoy.

All this to say, there is something good that the county fair does for your soul. Running into friends and neighbors that you haven’t seen in awhile. Seeing your community at its best. All topped off with your annual funnel cake. See, just so much good stuff. County fairs are still that reminder of the heritage that is threaded through your area and tied together by loyal volunteers who are serving and living to bring this event to life. Your presence is wanted and needed at your local county fair, so don’t be a stranger! Your piece of pie is waiting for you!

About Karina Jones 517 Articles
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 3 daughters near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion. Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA. You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report that is broadcast on 60 radio stations with coverage in 9 states, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and highlights R-CALF’s work on industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the ranch. Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
