Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!

Today we are enjoying an unexpected mid-summer cold snap! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.

Last night when my husband and I rode back to the house from moving some cattle, I ended the evening by saying, “geesh it feels like it’s going to snow!” And this this morning I swore I could see my breathe when I woke up and peaked my head out from under the covers seeing my husband had the window wide open in our bed room! Today’s cool, damp reprieve is giving us a day to shut down the hayfield machines, do some maintenance, regroup, check & move cows around and what I’m most excited about, BAKING, of course!

I’ve got laundry going. Hopefully the vacuum will get employed today. I’m going to go grab some cauliflower & broccoli florets out of the garden and see if I have any peas still left on the vines. That will accompany some grilled chicken breasts and Alfredo. I will bake some bread to go along with some cheesy potato soup for supper. I mean, when it’s feeling like soup season, one must follow the calling! I’ve got some girls wanting to bake some sweet treats so maybe some whole wheat chocolate chips cookies or banana muffins. I’ve got a brisket marinating to be thrown on the smoker tomorrow. And if we get really productive, I would like to get some waffles in the freezer for quick grab and go breakfasts.

For too soon, I know that the heat will be back. We will be hostage to the hayfield grind and trying to keep the house cool. So today, we take this as a gift from the good Lord to slow down and refresh a bit.

If you are experiencing this cool snap, what are you doing to enjoy this change in temps?

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Merriman, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.

Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the Jones Ranch.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
