My 9 year old daughter took part in a really special activity yesterday that was a collaboration between Sheridan County 4-H Extension and the Nebraska Game & Parks. She got to go fishing at Shell Lake, north of Gordon, NE with the Game Warden of all people! She even got to ride in his pick up out there. The kids learned the rules of fishing in Nebraska waters. I’m not sure if she was more excited to tell us that she got to ride in the Game Wardens pick up or that she caught two fish…..okay, catching the fish was probably the pinnacle.
When the kids came back to town my husband had a chat with the game warden who was really kind and said how much he enjoyed the time with the kids and that it was a perfect way to spend a Monday after a hectic weekend patrolling Nebraska lakes.
I don’t think we realize how stressful law enforcement has become and I think we are even more dismissive of the stress that a few bad apples cause game wardens. What I know if for the most part, Game and Parks officials really just want everyone to be safe while enjoying the outdoors.
Let’s not forget that these men and women are just doing their job. I, for one, am thankful for the men and women of the game & parks! I know my daughter had a great day fishing with the game warden who took time to spark a passion for the outdoors in those young people!
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Merriman, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
