Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!
Welcome to this beautiful Monday in the merry month of May!
I hope you all had a great weekend filled with celebrating the mothers in your life and it seems to be the season of celebrating high school and college graduates. All of this to say, there is a highly likely hood you got to be around some of the special people in your life and that is something to celebrate.
Here at the Jones Ranch, we have never been ones to shy away from doing work over holidays and this weekend was no exception. I remember many Mother’s Day weekends spent AIing heifers in the past and I have the Facebook memories to remind me. Gloriously beautiful weather making future mommies. What we would learn was we didn’t love calving so many heifers over the Valentine’s Day season if you know what I mean. So with age comes wisdom and also comes backing off your calving date, unless you have kids who have carefully mapped out the when they needs their show heifers bred by so they can avoid summer show dates. Then that means dear old mom is once again spending Mother’s Day weekend shoulder deep in the south end of a north end cow. Only come February, it will be my dear old daughters out there putting these heifers in the barn and checking around the clock. Remember, I am “older” and “wiser” than that. We also branded a bunch of older calves that were getting pretty salty. Luckily we have raised some great help. It was a big task checked off the to-do list.
Now we roll into a new week bouncing back and forth from our old place and pulling CIDRS on our big bunch of heifers, a few 4-H activities, an orthodontist appointment, still feeding pairs and most importantly praying for rain to get this summer grass going.

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
