A season of rest! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.

As we slither out of the first full month of 2025, there is something about January, about winter, that I long to hold on to and that is what is suppose to be a season of rest. Being involved in agriculture, I get a first hand view of what this season is intended to be. We can’t fight it. We can’t change it. In our part of the world, much of the land goes dormant because the weather dictates that. Call me romantic or a lunatic, but I think that we are best served when we follow nature in our own lives. When get outside and let the sunshine hit our faces and eyeballs. When we put our hands and feet in the soil and feel the earth’s warmth and power. And when we slow and rest when the earth is doing the same.

It should be no surprise then that yesterday I told you of National Puzzle Day. The month of January is National Soup Month, National Slow Cooker Month, and even National Sunday Supper Month! The world is screaming and grabbing for your attention, energy, and time 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 12 months of the year. I believe this has a direct correlation to our societies backslide in mental and physical health.

Maybe it is time to shut the door on the world and follow the earth. I know I’m really coming across as “crunchy” but I have never regretted simmering a pot of soup and enjoying an evening of playing board games or putting together a puzzle with them. Soon enough the days will be getting longer and this season of rest will flow into a season blooming with life. Enjoy this season!

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.

Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.

Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the Jones Ranch.

Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
