Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!
Saturday, Monday, who knows what day of the week it is? Welcome to this Thursday edition of Ranch Raised.
Does anyone else feel like we have entered this awkward space between Christmas and New Years when it takes conscience effort to remember what day of the week it is? But, then again, in ranching it our days are mostly the same, sort of like that movie Groundhogs Day.
Yesterday was a quiet holiday around our house. I mean, as quiet as it can get with 4 kids. Chores got done. Cows were fed a little extra since it just felt like the festive thing to do. By midafternoon, I realized my husband had disappeared. When I was taking the trash out, I looked down to the corrals and there he was. Saddled up and sorting on a pen of feeder cattle. I guess he figured there was no reason to waste a perfectly good December day.
Today my family from South Dakota and Oklahoma will arrive. I am so thankful they have always understood our situation with cattle and have always come to us for holidays. I will gladly clean and cook if it means that we can stay close to our herd. We will add a handful more kids to this chaos. There will be more chore boots piled up at the back door and more messes made, but it will all bring a lot of joy to my heart as we create memories to last a lifetime.
As our friends and family continue to zig zag all over the country to spend time with their loved ones we just want to tell everyone to stay warm, stay safe and have a great day!
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the Jones Ranch.
Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
