Fall is in the air! Welcome back to the Tuesday edition of Ranch Raised.
I love living in a land where the changing of the seasons can be experienced by all of my senses. You don’t have to live deep in the country to see the landscape morphing into golden tones and rich hues of the fall season. It is truly a feast for the eyes though, if you do get off the beaten path to experience this time of year.
Beyond the pastoral splendor, you will hear the serenade of the season, bawling cattle calling to one another as they go through a life change and mommas and babies say their last goodbyes. This serenade may be accompanied by the dull roar of farm equipment picking the field of the season’s harvest.
The air is dried down, with dust and pollen lingering, filling sinuses with a circus of allergens that always reminds us of this season’s arrival. Probably the sense that repulses this time of year the most.
And of course, how could I forget the sense of touch. I mean there is a certain “touch” to even this season beyond picking the bounty of my garden. Yes, fall and flies are in the air requiring a good swatting motion or a high tolerance to those pesky creatures.
No matter the challenges or blessings this season brings us, we take it one day at a time and are thankful to take it all in another year with the ones we love.
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the Jones Ranch.
Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
