This time of year, there is a certain energy in the atmosphere on any farm and ranch. There is new life being born at every turn. It is invigorating and exhausting all at the same time and unless you’ve experienced it, you probably won’t know what I am talking about.
While we tend to our herds and flocks reveling in the victory of bringing life earthside, we all shield ourselves for the dark truth of this line of work, that with life there will be death. You can’t always prevent it. Many times, it is completely out of our control and in some ways, as I’ve shared many times here on Ranch Raised, what happens on the ranch is a metaphor for all that the human race experiences in life.
Maybe it is my age, maybe it is the experience and wisdom that comes with every trip around the sun, but I see these metaphors with more and more regularity every year. It makes me pause. I take more mental notes. And sometimes I go looking for the meaning and the lesson of the situation as if I better know that I need to put the lesson in my life book to refer back on.
We will be thankful for the warm up and welcoming lots of new life in the coming days. And when you do what we do and experience it first-hand there is something undeniably miraculous about this season of new life, and I mean that it in more ways than one. Now you can go ahead and ponder on that.
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
