We are winding through a mid January week and it is great to have you back on Ranch Raised.
It seems we have all the balls up in the air and we are just doing our best to make sure nothing falls. Our middle girls are back to school after a couple of snow days kept them home, which no one minded one bit. Our oldest daughter left yesterday to the National Western Stock Show out in Denver, CO, where she will be working all week for Nelson Herefords. You can check out the great line up of bulls that they brought to the yards!
Reality hit my husband and I this morning, “We have no gate openers and neither one of us knew what anything gets fed in the barn.” We sent out some SOS text messages and got the feed orders for their show animals.
We have a couple of pens of cattle to get sorted today while baby boy is taking his nap. Days like today make me realize how thankful I am for our girls who help us so much. My kids are spread out in age from 16 years old down to 15 months old, but we all seem to work as a great team, and I miss my little teammates when they are not home.
But, we will get through today. Trucks will be here in the morning because it is shipping day. Which also means you have to come back tomorrow because I always have something special to say on shipping day as we put wheels under out 2023 calf crop and head them out of here and on to Burwell Livestock where they will sell on Friday!
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
