Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!

Welcome to a brand new week right here on Ranch Raised.

I come to you today with a more somber tone. My mind and heart are consumed with the devastation that so many in our Sandhills ranching community are going through. I will tell you that our ranches are a safe distance from any of the fires. But the gravity of the situation still consumes me.

The last few days have been a sobering a reminder that wild fires can happen to anyone, at anytime. So many unassuming souls had no idea how their lives would be changed last week. It is a cruel, cruel reality when you can’t out run or protect your property from a beast of a wildfire.

And even in the despair and devastation, I would be remised if I didn’t give credit to the dedication of the volunteer fire departments, the ranchers, equipment operators and all of the brave souls that have been battling these blazes with an army of volunteers tending to the home fronts calving and making sure the everyone is fed back at command posts and taken care of. There is nothing more raw than helping your fellow human beings out of death defying situations in act of self less compassion.

We do not know what the hours and days ahead will bring. We will not know the totality of the losses for awhile. But, what we can all do right now is pray and help where we can. Resources are needed immediately, please consider giving to the wildfire causes in Nebraska if you can. It is time for all of us rise up and help our fellow ranchers because together we are, “Sandhills Strong”!

About Karina Jones 475 Articles
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 3 daughters near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion. Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA. You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report that is broadcast on 60 radio stations with coverage in 9 states, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and highlights R-CALF’s work on industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the ranch. Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
