The season of empty jars! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.
If you were to walk into my kitchen this time of year, you will inevitably notice that next to my kitchen sink will be freshly washed, empty glass jars drying. I call this my season of empty jars. As I stand at that kitchen sink multiple times a day, doing dishes by hand, there is almost always a pint or quart jar in my wash water. As I hold that jar in my hands and wash it, it takes me back to warmer days, when fruit was in season. When the days were warmer. When the garden was bursting with color and an abundant harvest.
Those days of canning and preserving food are no cake walk, if you no what I mean. It is a mental obstacle course thinking through my check lists, making sure I have all my supplies, and then starting the certain processing to preserve those raw ingredients all while juggling 4 kids and a husband in and out of the kitchen and undoubtedly having no less than 57 people needing me for anywhere from 1-12 things. Okay, that last part might be a slight exaggeration.
But, then there are these long winter days, when my husband opens a jar of peach jam and exclaims, “this is like sunshine in a jar.” And all of the misery pitting every cherry one by one, washes down the drain when we bite into one of those vanilla syrup cherries that are honestly better than candy. I personally, love my pickled peppers. My nieces can’t get enough of my pickles and everyone raids my salsa cupboard every time they visit.
As I wash every empty jar that we devour, I say a silent prayer that I will be provided with the provision, energy, and patience to fill them all again, in a few short months!
