Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!

Just Ranchin’! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.

Being a female rancher this time of year, gets me a little sympathetic to the 100’s of females of we care for every day who are in their later stages of gestation. Nothing could be more true that a scene from life this morning.

Let start by saying, it was another frigid start to the day. There are some modern conviniences that I have worked hard to afford and I don’t owe anyone an explanation for using them. Que the heated seats in my suburban. I needed to go chop ice for the bred heifer, who I could see on the ridge above our house were starting to come up out of the draws they bedded down in for the night. I stepped outside in a hoodie to run to go start a vehicle and in a moment of wisdom I plopped right in my suburban with heated seats and said to the ole girl, “you are the chosen one this morning! I will let that diesel lumber wagon rest a little longer in the sun.” So, with my bum warming up nicely in those heated seats I headed out to the heifers, floated along the trail to their tank, opened their water up for their morning drink and then went back to my perch, I mean heated seat. My suburban was now surrounded by heifers life moths to a flame. I put my car in reverse and the back up camera was beeping and throwing alerts that I was dangerously close to objects which were just heifers that were trying to peer into my back window. And I know what they were thinking, “Momma do you got any cake in this grocery getter?” To which I replied, “Girls, if I’m hauling cake in this family wagon, rest assured its for me, not you!”

Okay, I’ve got cows and a family to feed, so I’ll catch you right back here tomorrow!

About Karina Jones 475 Articles
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 3 daughters near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion. Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA. You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report that is broadcast on 60 radio stations with coverage in 9 states, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and highlights R-CALF’s work on industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the ranch. Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
