The Cattle Auction! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.
Last week we sold a load of steers at one of our local cattle auction barns. The events of the day might seem mundane and ordinary to some but I began to reflect on the impact that our little trip to the sale barn had on the community.
After we collected our check from the sale barn, we enjoyed lunch at a local cafe. I mean, who could turn down chicken fried steak lunch special?
We stopped by a bakery and purchased some cookies for one of 4-H livestock buyers we had yet to properly thank and of course I added some extra cookies to our ticket to take home. We popped in to not one but two western stores in town and got our little boy fitted with new boots and a new black felt hat. I had a Christmas present to exchange at one store and grabbed 2 new sweaters for myself. One of the girls and I spent almost an hour in the library exchanging our books and DVDS. We got to chat with the library staff, work on a puzzle that was on the table and even take home a STEM kit as we got more acquainted with our local library. When you live out where we do, no trip to town is complete with grabbing some groceries & essentials and of course filling up with gas.
And to think, none of that commerce and trade would have happed in that community had we not been there to sell calves that day. Sale barns are the economic driver of so many communities. Never take for granted the impact they make on your town and the business they bring with them!
