Family Friendly Festivities! Thanks for tuning in today to Ranch Raised!
Last week our family bundled up and headed to town to take part in our community’s Heart of Christmas Celebration parade. By official account the parade boasted the highest number of floats and participants in its history! Businesses, churches, rodeo queens, ranches and organizations put on their creative thinking hats and got to working stringing lights, throwing tinsel and candy, and putting on one heck of a parade for well lined mainstreet in small town America.
Our family had their own role to be a part of. My girls pulled on their best Christmas sweaters and packed along a couple of their Border Collie pals and we joined our dog 4-H club with a float entry. Around 17 4-H pooches ranging in size from little Chihuahuas to a couple big Boxers and German Shepards that stretched for almost an entire city block! The kids and the dogs wrapped themselves in tinsel and battery powered lights and wore Santa Hats and red bandanas. They threw candy and dog bones to the crowds. T
And when the last float commenced and all the lights dimmed, our 4-H dog group was named “Best in Show” of the parade, so I guess the crowd really did love it.
I encourage you to look for community activities taking place in your area this holiday season and to take part as either a volunteer or a supporter with your presence, neither of which cost a dime, but instead create a richness in your heart while making memories.

Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Merriman, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
