The Fall Rush! Thanks for joining me today on Ranch Raised.
I’m feeling the fall rush on all fronts. We are still chasing hay thanks to dry conditions that are allowing us to get haying equipment deeper into bottom ground than usual. Then we are staring at hundreds of bales that need to find their homes in hay yards.
Reluctantly, we have eased into our homeschool routine this week. Last year we waited until the end of September to start and I felt like we were cramming a bit to get it all done. This year with starting the first of September we should be easily able to finish before the first of May with lots of wiggle room through out the year.
My stovetop only rests when I sleep, same with dishwasher because me….I’m the dishwasher. I have a decent amount of peaches canned and frozen, but I wouldn’t turn down more if I found a few more lugs. I have a good amount of sweet corn put up. Right now the sweet smell of plums is wafting through my house as I’m juicing plums while doing homeschool, which will later fill jars with my families favorite plum jelly. Last night I did a small batch of pizza sauce. I’m still waiting for the bulk of my tomatoes to turn so that I can replenish my tomato juice, salsa, and soup supply.
I wouldn’t say we are deep into fall, but you can definitely feel the summer warmth slipping away. So, I would say we are writing on the last page of summer 2025 and will be starting a new chapter sometime soon.
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Merriman, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her former role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
