Christmas on the Jones Ranch was uneventful and perfect. We have too many cows relying on simple life sustaining measures like having their ice chopped to drink and being fed that keeps us home, even on holidays.

Twas the Friday before Christmas and all through the ranch not a creature was stirring because they are all frozen!

I was going to continue on with more thoughts that run through a rancher’s head on days like today but honestly it is exhausting.

For those of you who are not livestock owners, I wanted to give you a look into what we are thinking on days like today!

If I’m being honest, I think that most of us involved in raising livestock really do not have our eye on any big holiday event coming up. We are literally in a fight mode expending every ounce of energy and every minute of daylight to take care of livestock right now.

I know, we are now under one week until Christmas. Blood pressure is rising across the land. The weather is not exactly cooperating. A perfect holiday experience hangs in the balance….or does it.

In light of the winter storm that has blown in and blanketed much of the Midwest, I think we better have a friendly chat.

It was me, I said I would take the fall for it. Last Friday on the Hot Barn Report radio program I told Santa that all I wanted for Christmas was moisture. Well, now we know that Mother Nature had her radio dial on the HBR and viola, she delivered a winter storm wall-up to the Midwest. See folks, that is the power of radio!

I am an out of the box thinker when it comes to gifts. I only give gifts that truly speak to me. I put a lot of thought and intention into what I am giving. It is probably why I am horrible at shopping at big box stores. I just cannot “connect” to the aisles and aisles of objects in there if you know what I mean.
