Missed us again! Thanks for joining me today right here on Ranch Raised.
We crossed all our fingers and toes. I left laundry on the line. We should have rolled down all of the vehicle windows, but alas, the rain gauge came up empty. While we are happy for those north and east of us who got a good drink from Mother Nature, we are keep hoping our turn will come soon. We have a slight chance tonight but as I keep checking my weather app, even those chances seem to be evaporating for my location.
We have started shuffling cattle around and are in drought planning mode. A load of weigh cows went to town this week. We keep scanning the herd building our list of the “next ones” that can be loaded up and sold. We sent off some fall cows to our south place when we brought some more bred heifers up to our north place. I have a feeling more fall cows and replacement heifers will soon be on the bus to our south place, as we hope to conserve all grass at this ranch for pairs. Because Lord knows, the hay yards are getting pretty depressing too.
We’ve done this before, too many times, if I must say. The weekly decisions and lists that are made can best be described as tying another knot in the proverbial rope to try and hang on. The outside world sees the strong cattle market and thinks we are living some kind of utopian romance novel. But, many of us are still carrying the stress that drought and even worse, fires, have laid on our shoulders.
I just want to conclude with the reminder that no matter what you are facing you are not alone and you are not the sum of your problems. Please, find someone to talk to when it gets to be too heavy of a load to bear!
