Karina Jones is a real-life ranch wife in the Nebraska Sandhills and one of the most highly sought-after speakers in the cattle industry nationwide!
August is like the Sunday of summer, thanks for tuning in to Ranch Raised.
This heat burst over the Midwest has been brutal. We keep telling ourselves, “one more day.” We can do it; we’ve gotten through it before. No one wants to be too harsh on mother nature because we know that this is summer, and it only comes around once a year. With August, no matter how hot it might be, comes the reality that September is creeping in and that means fall. The days are already getting shorter. Cooler temps, especially at night, will usher in the warm, fuzzy feelings of wearing hoodies and all things pumpkin spice.
So we will just pour another glass of iced tea and savor these last days of summer! I need to get my kitchen ready for another canning marathon. My tomatoes are starting to kick into gear. I have a couple of nieces that expect my dill pickle shelf to be restocked when they visit. I ran short on salsa last year, so I need to stay focused and stock my pantry shelves. I have a couple of lugs of beautiful Colorado peaches sitting here and a lug of pears. I wouldn’t mind finding some green beans and corn somewhere to put up before we get into the fall crops of apples and things. Who knows what else will come along. Maybe some pickled peppers if they get busy.
I really love gardening and canning. If I can grow it and preserve it for my family, it is like I am speaking my love language to them.
So tell me how your garden is doing or what you have been canning? Jams, jellies, pickles, fruit, veggies? I am here for all of it! Leave me a message on the Ranch Raised FB page!
Have you missed some of my stories lately? You can catch up and find them on the Your Ag Network app or website.
Karina ranches with her husband, Marty, and 4 children near Broken Bow, NE. She grew up in western NE, with roots also in southwest SD. The cattle industry and raising kids is her passion.
Watching the cattle industry go the path that it has gone, she could no longer sit quietly at home checking cows, fixing fence, and doing all the everyday tasks wondering when some else was going to make it all better. As she became more active and outspoken on industry issues, she was asked to join the R-CALF USA staff in September 2020 as the Checkoff Petition Campaign manager. That position transcended into her current role as full time Field Director for R-CALF USA.
You can hear her almost every Friday on Your Ag Network’s Hot Barn Report, where she deep dives into cattle industry issues and industry reforms. Listen to Ranch Raised on a Your Ag Network hometown station or www.youragnetwork.com where she talks about her daily life on the Jones Ranch.
Cattle producers are her people. She will meet you at the county fair, at the sale barn, or anywhere the dusty trail leads.
